On Friday, May 5th, 2023, Dr. Sedthapan Krajangwongs, Ph.D., Minister-Counsellor (Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation) together with Mr. Sompop Lapvibooksuk, Department of Science Service, led a team of delegates from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand (Chula) including Prof. Dr. Kaywalee Chatdarong, Vice President for Strategic Planning, Innovation, and Global Engagement, and her colleagues to visit Amazon Web Services executives at the company’s office in Arlington, Virginia.

OHESDC and Chula delegates were welcomed by Ms. Nathchaya Ponggakkarawat, Head of Public Policy, AWS (Thailand), and Mr. Suksompop Nimmannit, AWS Financial Planner, along with Benoît de Chateauvieux (Startup Sustainability Solutions Architect at AWS) and Marc Etienne Ouimette (Global Lead, AI Policy (AWS) at Amazon). The AWS team discussed AWS’s policies, investments, and projects with OHESDC and Chula. They also shared their experiences in supporting start-ups to find ways for AWS and agencies under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI) to collaborate in the future to help Thai startups and strengthen the startup ecosystem between Thai and the US.

AWS supports the Thai government’s policy to move Thailand towards Thailand 4.0, which focuses on building an innovation-driven economy, creativity, and technology, with the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Bangkok) Region in Thailand. Within 15 years, it will cover the data center, operating expenses, facilities, and services from regional businesses from computers, storage, and databases to emerging technologies such as machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), data lakes, and analytics including the Internet of Things (IoT). All this will make transferring existing applications to the cloud more accessible, faster, and most cost-effective for customers in Thailand, including startups, leading organizations, and government agencies to drive performances, increase the skill competency of the workforce, as well as develop Thailand to be the country at the forefront of digital technology as a foundation for further country development.
